Brief description

Design Philosophy:

SPG Architects is a mid-sized architectural firm based in New York City. Headed by two partners, SPG is a strong design practice that also provides a comprehensive range of architectural and interior services. The firm has served a wide variety of clients with a range of regional, national, and international projects including residences, corporate offices and retail establishments. Fashion clients include Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Corneliani, Catherine Malandrino, and Bill Blass New York. Lifestyle clients include Coty beauty, Hartmann Luggage, Andrew Martin LTD, and Versteel. Media and New Media clients include Time Warner, American Online, Kemado Records and Palm Pictures. Residences include numerous co-op and condominium apartments, urban townhouses, second homes, free-standing houses and residential compounds throughout the United States and Latin America. Although the clients are diverse, they are united in their desire for architecture that is well conceived and well executed by a team of professionals.

SPG Architects' modernist approach to design allows for the various functions of a space to be organized and expressed, while eliminating the cacophony of the untended environment. Architectural ideas are drawn from the project site and the client's needs and desires. These then are expressed through manipulations of form and light. An interest in up-to-date building technologies and construction materials, both natural and man-made, further informs the design. SPG's work clearly presents a visual consistency based on human proportions, the exploration of light, and the judicious use of materials that provide singular tactile, visual, spatial and temporal experiences.

Environmental Statement:

SPG Architects is committed to employing material and energy resources to their maximum end use and efficiency in order to limit the impact of our built work on our environment. Alternative energy sources including geo-thermal systems for domestic hot water and interior heating and cooling, solar energy, and hydro-power have all been employed by SPG Architects in lieu of petro-chemicals fossil fuels. These alternative energy sources, used in combination with Low-E glass, the exploitation of daylight and natural ventilation, and the responsible use of building insulation greatly reduce the carbon footprint of our built work. Water reclamation and recycling also lessen our use of valuable resources and is an important element of our recent work as a means to reduce the eroding effects of run-off, maintain aquifer levels, while responsibly re-using rainwater for landscaping and other non-potable uses. Efficient use of materials and recycling of demolished and unused building materials serves to limiting landfill use. In addition, the use of fritted exterior glass and green roofs protect birds in flight and diminish heat gains and micro-climates created by the built environment. Together with the engaged interest of our clients and contractors, we are unwavering in our commitment to high standards of environmental consciousness. Both partners maintain affiliations with a variety of socially and environmentally responsible organizations, and Coty Sidnam sits on the board of the Wildlife Conservation Society. SPG Architects has two architects on staff that have received their LEED accreditation including principal, Eric Gartner, reflecting our commitment to energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive design.
