Brief description
Moore Ruble Yudell Architects & Planners, in over thirty years of practice, has earned a national and international reputation for excellence in design based on an unwavering commitment to humanistic principles and thoughtful development of unique solutions to an extraordinary range of projects and places. Under the leadership of Partners John Ruble, FAIA, Buzz Yudell, FAIA, and Principals James Mary O’Connor, AIA, Michael S. Martin, AIA, Krista Becker, AIA, LEED® AP, Jeanne Chen, AIA, Neal Matsuno, AIA, LEED® AP, Mario Violich, AIA, ASLA, and Associate Principal Stanley Anderson, AIA, IIDA, the firm has built a diverse portfolio of award-winning work that embraces and addresses the critical concerns of community and identity. The desire to create meaningful, memorable, and sustainable places, inspired by climatic and cultural understandings, has guided the firm’s work at all scales from private residences and multi-family housing, to academic and civic buildings, to community and campus master planning and design.
This wide range of work develops from a single office that fosters a culture of communication and cross-fertilization between staff and projects. Our inherently collaborative approach extends to a broader community of public and private sector clients and colleagues, adding vitality and authenticity to the design process and ultimately enriching the quality and meaning of each effort. The firm’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications and recognized through over 200 awards for design excellence, including the 1992 AIA California Firm of the Year Award, the 2007 AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal for John Ruble and Buzz Yudell, a Royal Architectural Institute of Canada National Urban Design Award, three Chicago Athenaeum American Architecture Awards and seven National AIA Honor Awards for architectural and urban design.
In 2006, Moore Ruble Yudell received the Architecture Firm Award, the highest recognition the National American Institute of Architects can bestow. In making this award, The AIA Committee on Design stated: “The firm has consistently produced an outstanding body of work rooted in a deep commitment to humanistic architecture. Their work is widely admired for its spirited celebration of habitation at many scales and its respect for people, context and place. The firm continues to evolve in response to new challenges and opportunities while remaining true to the fundamental principles of humanism.”
At the core of our practice in architecture, planning, urban design, landscape design, interior design, and graphics, we continue to evolve an inclusive process resulting in humane, beautiful, and evocative places that reflect and respond to real needs and desires. Through our diverse body of work that includes campus, education, performance, research, justice, mixed-use retail and housing, we seek authentic contemporary design solutions that are grounded in a philosophy that respects the natural and cultural character of its place and builds upon the most basic responses to site, context, and community. The firm aspires to create environments that celebrate human activity through a commitment to environmentally responsible design that has evolved from a wide range of design efforts throughout the United States and around the globe.
Our broad international experience has provided valuable lessons in understanding, preserving and heightening the experiences that differentiate one place from another. Our philosophy is to preserve what is best about each context and to design places that are more than simply the sum of their parts. Moore Ruble Yudell has regarded this ongoing commitment as a tremendous opportunity to strengthen the spirit, culture and aspirations of each client we serve.
