Fermín Vazquez founded b720 Architects in 1997 and he is currently the Managing Partner. Since then, the practice has carried out projects in major cities in Spain, in the architectural field and in urban planning, and has won numerous competitions. Fermín Vázquez combines practice with teaching, he has been project teacher at the Escuela Técnica Superior Arquitectura de Barcelona (Spain) and the École d’Architecture et de Paysage de Burdeaux (France). Nowadays, he teaches at the European University of Madrid (UIM). Moreover, he gives lectures at universities and institutions all over the world and contributes from time to time in specialized publications.
b720 Arquitectos –practice with more than 50 professionals working at offices in Barcelona, Madrid and Porto Alegre (Brasil)– highlights among its recently completed projects: the Gran Casino de la Costa Brava (Lloret de Mar, Girona), the Lleida-Alguaire Airport, the City of Justice of Barcelona and l’Hospitalet, the Porta Fira Towers, the recovery of Plaza del Torico (Teruel) and La Mola Hotel and Conference Centre (Terrassa, Barcelona). Among his current projects are distinguished: the promotion of social dwelling in Mieres (Asturias), the Hospital Ernest Lluch (Vallès Oriental, Barcelona), the construction of a public school in Puigcerdà (Girona), the waterfront in Porto Alegre, Brazil; the World Trade Center of Igualada; an office tower in Seville and two mixed-use towers in Galicia.
During the first years of its existence b720 Arquitectos collaborated with colleagues of great international prestige for its projects in Spain. All these projects carried out, right from the start, in collaboration, as real partners. Outstanding amongst them are projects undertaken with David Chipperfield –City of Justice in Barcelona and L'Hospitalet or building of America’s Cup–, with Toyo Ito –the Fira Towers project in Barcelona's new fairground– and with Jean Nouvel –Agbar Tower, the remodelling and extension of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Poblenou Park in Barcelona–.
Throughout his career, Fermín Vázquez and b720's projects have received numerous awards. Recently, the project City of Justice won the RIBA Award 2010 and the World Architecture Festival, category Community Buildings-Law Court. In 2007, the America's Cup building won the European RIBA Award and was finalist of Mies Van der Rohe Prize, IX Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo and the Stirling Prize. Regarding FAD Awards, in 2007, Indra building was finalist and also did Indra and Veles e Vents builiding for America’s Cup in 2008. In 2004, the project Paseo del Óvalo won the prize “Ciudades Patrimonio de la Humanidad” awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Spain, and the European Prize of Urban Public Space.
