Brief description

Frederico Valsassina was born in Lisbon in 1955. Graduated in Architecture by the Fine Arts School of Lisbon, in July of 1979. Works in partnership with national and foreign offices having created in 1986 his own office with Tiago Leite de Araújo. His work has been published in Portugal and abroad. Receives an Honour Award of Valmor Prize 2003 for the Alcântara Rio project and the 1st Prize of Valmor Prize 2004 for the Arts’ Business Centre project; in 2005, as an invited teacher, has lectured the class of Conception of Residential Spaces, integrated on the Master’s Degree on Real Estate Development of the School of Architecture-UTL; in 2007 receives the INH/IHRU National Award, being represented on the Lisbon’s Trienal. In 2008 his work on the new RTP/RDP Broadcasting Studios is selected for the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona. In 2009 he participates on the Public Competition for the New Oporto’s Justice Campus and he is pre-selected for the IV ENOR Elevators Architecture’s Award.

In 1988 wins the Competition for Siva’s Office Park in Alfragide; in 1990 designs “Casa do Alto” in Colares and, in association with George Pencreach recovers the Eden Cine-Theatre; in 1993 recovers the “Paço de Chão do Souto” in Paredes de Coura (XIV century); in 1994 is invited to participate in the Ideas Competition for the EXPO98 plan; in 1995 he is one of the authors of Vila Expo and designs with Raj Rewal the Aga-Khan Foundation in Lisbon and Braga Parque Shopping. In 1996, with the scope of EXPO98 designs Portugal Telecom’s Pavilion, wins the Competition for the Olympic Swimming Pool of E.U.L. and executes the recovery project of Porto Covo’s Palace (Head office of Lusitania Insurance Company), in 1998 enters in the Final Stage of the Competition for the “Torre do Tombo” in Aveiro. In 1999 he is invited to design the city of Oporto’s Olympic Swimming Pool, wins the Competition for the Logoplaste Technological Centre in Cascais and executes the project for the Recovery of the old Luso Fármaco Institute in Lisboa (Quelhas 28.) In 2000 wins the International Competition for the Group of Projects for the Elderly Residencies in the Iberian Peninsula launched by Grupo Mello, designs in the Logoplaste Technological Centre, the building for the Support Centre for the Child’s Development (CADIN) and the new Headquarters of Grupo Santander in Portugal. In 2001 designs the House in Colares, the Arts’ Business and Hotel Centre in Parque das Nações and the Numismatic Museum from Lusitania Insurance Company. In 2002 he is invited to design the new Headquartes of Brisa in Cascais and wins the Competition for the South Area of Office Park Expo.

In 2003 iniciates an association with Aires Mateus & Associados and together execute a project of a residential building on Rato, Houses in El Sayura in Morocco, the urbanístic study for Alcântara, the Recovery of Napolitana’s Factory, the Recovery of Alcântara Terra’s Station for Refer, urban rehabilitation projects for ESAF, the cover for Alcântara’s ETAR for Simtejo and the Transports Museum in Arco Cego for Lisbon’s Municipality, the recovery of the Condes de Murça’s Convent, in Santos, the Mónicas Convent, in Lisbon. He designs the Lake House in Aroeira and he is invited to design a multifunctional/international unit for Brisa.

In 2004 wins the International Competition for the RDP/RTP Studios in Lisbon; in 2005 designs the new Headquarters of Grupo BES on Rua Rosa Araujo and the Assistance and Research on Auto Immunity Foundation Centre in Taguspark. In 2006 he is invited to design the houses in Vila Utopia, wins a Competition to design an Hotel on Av. Liberdade (Grupo Porto Bay) and designs a House in Boavista, Porto, Houses in Praia Grande, a House in Quinta da Marinha and Houses in Estoril, the new Headquarters of Grupo Edifer, the new pavilion of Valsassina School and the St. Thomas School in Lisbon.

In 2007 he is invited to design a group of houses for the Herdade da Comporta and wins an Image Competition for the new Brisa’s toll plazas; develops the building for the new Headquarters of Alcatel-Lucent Portugal and concludes the Logoplaste Campus.

In 2008 he wins, in partnership with Aires Mateus & Associados, the Competition for the new Headquarters of Grupo EDP, in Lisbon; he executes the requalification project for the Vale do Gaio’s Inn, in Alcácer do Sal and he designs the Herdade do Pontal’s Masterplan, in Faro, and the rehabilitation of Sines’ Historical Centre.

In 2009 he designs the new facilities for CUF Alcântara Hospital, he participates on the Public Competition for the New Oporto’s Justice Campus (invited by Somague Group) and develops the project for Botanical Garden’s Villa and the study for Ernesto Roma’s School (APDP), in Lisbon. He is, also, selected for the National Exhibition of Housing Architecture Portugal 2006/2008 and is invited as Jury for the International Architecture Competition held in the Campinas’ University, Brasil.
