Architect's statement
Client requirements: The client had a small garden in his back yard. This free space was pitched, and featured a notable unevenness. The client wanted to profit this space as much as possible: they wanted a place to rest, eat, read, etc.
Concepts developed: A wooden, folded surface was proposed in order to qualify different kinds of atmospheres (from shaded and protected ones to open and exposed areas) which would be, in every case, related to the surrounding garden. Moreover, it solved the unevenness of the garden. The most flagrant drop was used to create a small parking place, over which the folded carpet hovered.
Materials used: Basically, timber, due to its properties when applied in open spaces (low thermal inertia). Besides, it was respectful with the surrounding garden. The structure of the folded and cantilevered parts was carried out by means of a steel structure.
Different spaces featured: The Shadow features many kinds of atmospheres which enables the client to make the best of the garden, and use it somehow in any kind of situation. It features covered, sheltered areas from where one can actually "be" in the garden in a rainy day, and at the same time, it featured open areas, where one could sunbathe, rest, etc, in a sunny day. There are shaded areas, where one can find protection from the sun in the hottest days of the year.
