Can a tree generate a building around it?
The work, located in a lot of 2,242 sqm inside an area for productive facilities in Santeramo in Colle (Bari), gives to the company an adequate structure for manufacture-managerial activities.
The building consists of three joined parts, manufacture area, management space, private house, arranged to create a courtyard round the secular oak-tree already existing on the site to make more thrilling and sustainable the life of people which live and work here.
From the beginning, the tree, an important mark of the place’s vegetation, has been the creator element of the project.
30 tons of steel, 750 square meters of sheets, 4500 blocks of local tufa, 160 square meters of glass, 270 cubic meters of concrete, ... gave life to this work that is characterized by a built surface of 625 sqm on one level, and is completed by both a green area of about 1000 sqm and a green parking. An underground cistern allows to collect and to hoard the rainwater which is utilized for both the green areas irrigation and inside utilities.
The building has been created as a bio-climatic organism. During the project phase, studies about both the sun and winds allowed to define the orientation of tree functional areas, their volumes and their materials, and then to minimize both thermal leaks and energy use which are connected to heating and cooling plants. These have been made to meet to the thermal contribution during critical days of the summer and winter time. The tree and the moving water sheet that laps inside façades of the building improve the bio-climatic organism’s behavior. During the summer time, the thick foliage of the oak-tree creates a pleasant shade, and the water, by its evaporation, makes more cool and comfortable spaces of both work and life which are hit and warmed by sun beams when the tree loses its foliage during the winter time. The private house and management spaces receive the direct natural lighting whereas the production area receives the diffused natural lighting to spare annoying situations of the dazzle. Moreover, the private house has a sunscreen system on the southern side. This sunscreen is a further protection from the sun in the critical summer time and it creates privacy during the work time.
During the realization of the building, the ground excavation has been made with more caution to don’t damage the root of the tree and all of diggings, consisting of limestone, have been utilized for fillings up, foundations heap of stones and the tidying up of the green area. Rubbishes consisting of packings of paper, cardboard an plastic, have been conferred on containers of public utilities for their recycling.
Our example wants to spur on reflections about spaces and buildings in which we spend a long time of our life; they can be conceived to make pleasant and harmonious the life of people as regards to values’ places.
