Designer's statement

Residence De Boei is a residential project located in Middelkerke, on the Belgian coast. Urban planning limits the height of the building and imposes an inclined roof.

The design can be divided into two parts: An upper structure along the street that is part of continuous terraced housing and the lower structure, the ground level and two underground parking garages built on the total area of the site. The underground parking garage is equipped with a roof garden that livens up the inner courtyard.

The residential part of the project consists of 12 apartments, and 12 duplexflats. Each apartment is built around a core that includes all the functional spaces: bathroom, kitchen and restroom.

The plans of the apartments can be mirrored so that the front and the rear of the structure are identical in construction. This creates an open plan for the apartments and duplex flats. The living and sleeping quarters can be swapped easily so that the living space can be located either on the street- or garden side.

The duplex flats have a staggered structure, with a staircase that connects the down – front side with the upper-rear side or vice versa. The roof of the project is mirrored every other apartment, fragmenting the roof.
