Designer's statement

The Thermal Park in Dolores is conceived as a large landscape intervention that integrates all indoor and outdoor activities in a square grid of canals and walkways extended over the plot. The complex incorporates various elements from the classical landscape design such as symmetrical axis, artificial mountain, ‘follies’, water canals, bridges and labyrinths. These iconographic resources, which have proved their value through the history of garden and park design, are here reused in an aquatic park, generating a contemporary design that establishes new relations between program and landscape.

The architecture of the complex is a harmonious ensemble of quiet and stealthy volumes that are integrated into the landscape design and accommodate the program in spacious and powerful interiors. Although its exterior appearance is serious and based on repetition, the interior contains very different programs in varied architectonical compositions. A balance between the interior spaces and the covered outdoor areas delimited by elegant arcades, generates a continuous interaction between the inside and the surrounding landscape by means of protected and shady porches.

The project establishes an equalized scheme of territorial occupation (the organizing grid) which is flexible and adaptable in time. Thereby the complex will maintain, even with future extensions, a well proportioned equilibrium between interior and exterior spaces, architecture and landscape, water and green areas.
