Architect's statement
Augustenborg's symmetry has been generated by the historic castle, and its harbor dominated by obsolete industrial facilities.
The Modern Castle proposes that the old industrial ruins be re-purposed as dense cultural buildings. This scheme also seeks to emphasize the difference between the town and the landscape by articulating their contrasting relationships to the fjord.
The urban connection to the waterfront is improved with the addition of a dense series of new buildings and plazas that respond to the scale of the existing town. Views out to the landscape are preserved, and the new public spaces extend to wildlife areas around Augustenborg.
To improve the landscape's water connection, storage areas are withdrawn from the fjord, and the shoreline is filled with dense grasses, plants, and trees that blend into the natural environment. The new landscape is then 'farmed' for energy, which is transferred to the urban side via the dike.
