Designer's statement

The new IDOM Group offices are located in the old bonded warehouse of Deusto. It has 13 000m2 destined for offices, research and development areas such as the white-room and the prototypes workshop, and social spaces like a 450m2 room for exhibitions and events.

The design of the new offices, carried out by Javier Perez Uribarri from ACXT, the group’s architecture studio, combines existing elements with the new ones. The great beams of the original structure have been left uncovered in the majority of floors. The openings used by the old car-lifts that lifted cargo up to the roof are now occupied by a splendid main staircase and glass covered lifts that will offer views of both the offices and the canal.

Above, on the roof, is where the transformation is more obvious. In the tower, where the noisy machinery of the car-lifts used to be enclosed, there is now a library, a space for good ideas to flow in silence. On the rest of the roof, the space previously taken up by the ship bales is now occupied by the building services machinery, “camouflaged” under an artificial grass hill which will be used as a garden and resting area by the partners and employees of the firm.

The building is equipped with the most advanced energy efficiency solutions: low consumption taps and bathroom fittings, rain-water tanks for the automatic watering of the garden, automatic lighting regulation systems, great slats on the façade that allow for a high protection against sun radiation and unique diffusion by movement and HVAC by water systems. For the latter, different coloured beams that round up the HVAC and lighting in a single element have been designed and installed. It is estimated that these measures will bring about energy savings of nearly 60%, compared to the normal consumption of a similar building.
